Usa City in Oita Prefecture is the home of Sanwa Shurui. Since its establishment in 1958, Sanwa Shurui has been producing sake, shochu, and other alcoholic beverages in this region blessed by nature. More than 60 years have passed since then. What we have always cherished in our sake brewing is the “koji and fermentation culture” that Japan is proud to share with the world. “We want to bring the appeal of ‘koji and fermentation’ from Usa to the world.” In May 2022, we opened the KARASHIMA KOKU NO KURA facility on the site of our former headquarters, where visitors can witness, experience, and learn about sake brewing and the koji and fermentation culture fostered by Usa’s climate and natural features.
Usa City in Oita Prefecture has long been a center of sake brewing, thanks to its high-quality groundwater and the rice and wheat harvested in the Usa Plain. Taking advantage of the ideal climate for sake brewing, Usa City was certified in March 2020 as the country’s first special zone for refined sake brewing, officially named *“Usa City Special Zone for Sake Brewing Experiences,” with the aim of revitalizing the local area through refined sake-brewing experiences.
At KARASHIMA KOKU NO KURA, we are working to convey the appeal of Usa City through experiences that convey the sake-brewing culture cultivated in Usa.
* Special measures under the Liquor Tax Act for refined sake-brewing experiences in special zones
